Packing is one of the most important parts of any move. A little planning and organization can make the process much smoother, ensuring your belongings arrive at your new home safely and intact. At Good Guys Moving, we’ve helped countless families and businesses move efficiently in Johnson County and Kansas City. Here are some expert packing tips to help you get started:
Before you begin packing, make sure you have everything you need: sturdy boxes in various sizes, packing tape, bubble wrap, packing paper, and markers for labeling. It’s better to have more supplies than you think you’ll need to avoid interruptions.
Stay organized by packing one room at a time. This helps prevent mixing up items from different rooms and makes unpacking much easier. Start with rooms or items you don’t use daily, such as the attic or storage spaces.
Label every box with its contents and the room it belongs to. Be specific, like “kitchen – pots and pans,” rather than just “kitchen.” This will help Good Guys Moving place the boxes in the correct rooms and make unpacking easier for you.
When packing heavier items like books, dishes, or tools, use smaller boxes. This prevents boxes from becoming too heavy to lift and reduces the risk of damage. Larger boxes should be reserved for lighter, bulkier items like bedding or clothing.
Use bubble wrap, packing paper, or soft clothing to wrap fragile items like dishes, glassware, or electronics. Make sure to cushion the bottom and sides of the box with extra padding. Label boxes containing fragile items with “FRAGILE” on all sides.
Avoid overpacking boxes. Boxes that are too heavy can break, and items inside can get damaged. Aim for boxes to weigh no more than 50 pounds, so they’re manageable and easier for your movers to handle.
Use high-quality packing tape to seal the top and bottom of each box. Reinforce the seams to prevent boxes from bursting open during the move. Be sure to securely tape boxes containing fragile items for extra protection.
Pack a box with essential items you’ll need right away when you arrive at your new home. Include things like toiletries, a change of clothes, important documents, chargers, and basic kitchen supplies. Keep this box with you during the move.
For large furniture like beds, desks, or bookshelves, disassemble them before the move. Keep all screws, bolts, and small pieces in labeled plastic bags taped to the furniture parts. This will make reassembling everything much easier.
Pack electronics like TVs, computers, and gaming consoles in their original boxes if you have them. If not, wrap them in blankets or bubble wrap and place them in sturdy boxes. Label all cords and keep them together in a separate box or bag.
Instead of buying more packing materials, use what you already have. Soft items like towels, blankets, and clothing can be used to cushion fragile items or fill empty spaces in boxes.
Before you disconnect electronics or disassemble complicated furniture, take pictures of the setup. This will make it much easier to put everything back together in your new home.
